DONKEY'S
ICONIC (AND RIGHTLY SO)
Donkey’s unique cheesesteak – which is served on a poppy seed Kaiser roll and smothered in onions – has attracted a cult-like following, and not just among South Jerseyans.
Philadelphians have also fallen in love with this fabulous sandwich, so much so that former mayor (and former PA governor) Ed Rendell wrote a letter to the owner begging him to move Donkey’s across the river to Philadelphia. The New York Post proclaimed Donkey’s to be the best cheesesteak in America. Legendary chef Anthony Bourdain described it as “sublime.” Donkey’s was even featured in an episode of ABC’s Philly-themed TV series The Goldbergs.
This place is older than the cheesesteak itself. During Prohibition, it was a Jewish speakeasy. In fact, the fake sign (Parkside Athletic Association) and secret bell system are still there. In the 1940s it was bought by former Olympic boxer Leon “Donkey” Lucas, whose punch was “like the kick of a mule.” The Lucas family operates Donkey’s Place even today, 80 years later.
Your Philly cheesesteak experience is not complete unless you have paid a visit to Donkey’s Place. It is open Monday-Friday during daylight hours, and the first Saturday of every month. (The area can get a little sketchy at other times.) Grab a table, order an ice cold beer, and prepare for a treat.
Donkey's has two branch eateries in safer locales with more expansive hours, but nothing can match the ambience of the original.
