JOHN'S ROAST PORK

THE REAL DEAL

If you are looking for the REAL Philly cheesesteak experience, it doesn’t get any more real than this. John’s is a shack at the edge of a South Philly wasteland between Delaware Avenue and I-95, with railroad tracks on one side and what looks like the Gotham City Axis Chemical Factory on the other.

But make no mistake – you wll not find a better cheesesteak anywhere. John’s is on (or at the top of) nearly everyone’s best cheesesteak list, with awards out the wazoo. And not just local awards. John’s has been recognized by Gourmet magazine, the Washington Post, and Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America, and has appeared on the Travel Channel with Andrew Zimmer. John’s has even received the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence.

How can anyone resist hot tasty beef grilled and seasoned to perfection, smothered in cheese and onions on a delicious sesame roll? This is as good as a cheesesteak can possibly get. John’s was founded in 1930 at the dawn of the cheesesteak era and is proudly run today by the third generation of the Bucci family. These folks know what they’re doing.

We would be remiss not to mention John’s equally outstanding namesake roast pork sandwich. It’s hard for any Philadelphian entering John’s to decide whether to order from the roast pork counter or the cheesesteak counter. Decisions, decisions.

If you are planning a visit, be aware that John’s Roast Pork is open only during daytime hours (10 am to 5 pm) from Tuesday through Saturday. Although John’s would be an ideal place to grab a cheesesteak before an Eagles game, it is closed on Sunday and Monday.
