JIM'S SOUTH STREET
PHILADELPHIA CLASSIC
Jim’s is every Philadelphian’s pride and joy, the cheesesteak place that has it all – a prime location on colorful South Street, a distinctive, cool-looking exterior (and an equally cool and spacious two-story interior), an impressive award collection and celebrity photo gallery, and, of course, amazing cheesesteaks that are worth the wait in line (but don’t worry – the line moves fast).
Most people don’t know that the original Jim’s was – and still is – in West Philly. That store, now called Jim’s West, owned the place on South Street but sold it off in 2011. Jim’s South Street, the subject of this webpage and the place we all know and love, is now independently owned. (NOTE: Both places are on Willie’s Best Cheesesteaks list.)
A 2022 fire tore through the block, destroying several businesses including Jim’s. But Jim’s came back stronger than ever. Not only was Jim’s unique Art Deco look restored in every detail, but they acquired the space next door and uncovered mosaics by Philadelphia’s own world-renowned artist Isaiah Zagar (creator of Philadelphia’s famed Magic Gardens). These were lovingly restored by the artist himself and a talented team of preservationists, transforming Jim’s South Street into a feast for the eyes and taste buds alike.
Jim’s cheesesteak has won Philadelphia magazine’s “Best of Philly” award five times, along with countless other honors. But the proof of the pudding (or cheesesteak, as the case may be) is in the eating. The next time you visit South Street, you will want to drop by and treat yourself to one of Philly’s true treasures.
