There is something magical about a gooey cheesesteak – hot, messy, and oh so delicious. When they bag up your steak at Gooey Looie’s, they give you a generous handful of paper towels. That’s your first clue. When you unwrap that sandwich like you unwrap a gift, there is beef, beef, and more beef, as far as the eye can see.
Oh yes, it is a cheesesteak all right, but a cheesesteak done Gooey Looie’s way. You wonder how you will even be able to pick this big boy up, much less take a bite out of it. Yet somehow you find a way to take on your super-sized delicacy – and in the end, you are glad you did. A Gooey Looie's steak is abundant in beef and abundant in flavor. (This is South Philly, after all.)
Gooey Looie’s listed street address is 231 McClellan Street in the heart of South Philly, but if you go there, you will only see what looks like the door to a residence. You will need to walk around to the entrance of Pennsport Plaza, a small, attractive courtyard plaza between McClellan and Moore, and find Gooey Looie’s there among the row of shops.
Gooey Looie’s is a tight space inside, but there are tables and benches outside. Considering the gooey factor, dining outside is probably your best option. There you can enjoy your overflowing cheesesteak in peace and comfort – and enjoy it you will.
