THE PHENOMENON
Curly's Comfort Food, a relative newcomer located in Levittown, Bucks County, stunned the Philly cheesesteak world back in 2023 when it won the prestigious Philadelphia Beautiful annual cheesesteak competition. All the big names were there - Pat's, Geno's, Jim's South Street, Steve's, Angelo's, Café Carmela, Cosmi's, Donkey's, and 24 others. Curly's made it all the way through the bracket and emerged the victor.
So who is this fellow Curly, and what is behind his phenomenal sandwich's meteoric rise to the highest echelon of cheesesteakdom?
Michael "Curly" Sarian, a lifelong area resident, was (and maybe still is) a competitive eater who appeared in 6 Wing Bowls under the name "Curly Von Burly." He simply loves food - eating it, preparing it, and serving it. And based on the label photo that appears on his line of tasty bottled sauces, he bears at least a passing resemblance to his famed Three Stooges namesake.
Curly's operates out of what looks like a former Checkers fast food location. But Curly's is anything but fast food. It is comfort food - truly excellent comfort food - all made to order. Burgers, wings, mac and cheese, and anything else your heart desires. And to drink? Kutztown cane sugar sodas. The masterpiece, of course, is the Curly's cheesesteak. A generous serving of hot-off-the-grill beef, expertly seasoned and infused with mouth-watering melted cheese and onions, all served on a fresh sesame roll. A cheesesteak lover's dream.
Curly's at peak time is a busy place indeed, with a crew of a dozen or more scrambling to fill orders that come from in-person customers, and from the drive-through lane, and by phone, and online. There is not much indoor seating space, but plenty of outdoor tables for when the weather is nice. One way or another, you will be fine, and very glad you made the trip to Levittown.
