COSMI'S
SOUTH PHILLY'S HIDDEN JEWEL
The handsome gent in that photo is Mike Seccia – but those who know him well, including Eagles legends Big Dom and Jason Kelce, call him “Cugine” (Italian slang for “Cousin”). He is the proud third-generation owner of the corner deli at 8th and Dickinson that his great-uncle Cosmi, an Italian immigrant, built by hand.
There is a lot of pride, tradition, skill, and experience that goes into making every Cosmi’s cheesesteak – and it is a superb sandwich, just as Philadelphia magazine recognized when it proclaimed Cosmi’s “Philly’s Best Cheesesteak” not once but twice. There are plenty of good steak places for the tourists, yuppies, and hipsters, but real Philadelphians come to Cosmi’s. They know they can count on a perfect steak every time, brimming with quality beef or fresh-cut (not frozen) chicken breast – and friendly banter with Cugine.
In warm weather, patrons can dine al fresco on a folding table by the sidewalk. However, if you are more daring, you can enjoy your mouth-watering Cosmi’s steak while leaning over the hood of someone else’s car.
