There is no other neighborhood quite like Manayunk in Philadelphia or anywhere in America. Nestled on a hill by the banks of the Schuylkill River and just 15 minutes from Center City, this charming National Historic District and Classic Town features interesting stores, eateries, and other attractions housed in renovated Victorian buildings and ancient mills. Fittingly, Manayunk is also home to one of the best cheesesteaks you will find anywhere in the city.

 

Bar Jawn stands on a corner in the very center of Manayunk, right where Main Street bends. Yes, it’s a sports bar, but with a much cooler, authentic Manayunk vibe – a mostly young, upscale, family-friendly crowd. The staff are welcoming, the atmosphere pleasant, the seating comfortable. It is exactly the vision owners Dave and Ana had in mind when they founded Bar Jawn. They have a sweet spot in their hearts for this place – it was once an Italian BYOB where the duo shared their first Valentine’s Day together.

 

The cheesesteak is served on a real plate along with fries shaped like ruffled potato chips. There is nothing about this sandwich that is not amazing – the fresh quality sesame roll, the generous helping of succulent beef and onions seasoned to perfection, and the expertly melted cheese. Dave and Ana describe it as “elevated bar food.” It is all that and more. But don’t just take Willie’s word for it. The legendary chef Anthony Bourdain visited Bar Jawn and gave it high praise as well.
